ClosedIn 1919, the artists united in a formal collective, calling themselves the Group of Seven. Arthur Lismer, Franklin Carmichael, A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald, Frederick Varley, Lawren Harris and Frank Johnston were the original members. (Harris and MacDonald are credited with initiating the group.) On the exit of Frank Johnston from the Group, A.J. Casson was invited to join in 1926. Edwin Holgate and L.L. Fitzgerald also became members. The first official Group of Seven exhibition was held at the Art Gallery of Toronto in the spring of 1920. Also included was the work of colleague Tom Thomson, though he had died under mysterious circumstances in 1917 while on a canoe trip in Algonquin Park in Eastern Ontario.

The catalogues were printed and ready for sale at 10 cents each; the art was hung – more than 180 pieces. Receiving mixed reviews and not as many visitors as hoped, the exhibition was not a failure but neither was it classed as a success.
